Parents Are Already Paying for Reading Help

About 4 in 10 American fourth graders read below the basic level, the most since 2002. Parents are looking for help, the good tutors fill up and word travels fast. On Care.com, reading tutors list from about $20 to $40 an hour, and that's before you get to the specialists.

Perfect timing

There's Still Time. Not for Long.

Moms start looking for reading help the week a report card or a teacher's note comes home. The woman they call is the one they already heard about, and the first few students are the ones who tell the other moms.

Why this works

Built for Women Who Are Good With Kids

🪜

You'll always know what comes next

The 5-minute check tells you where a child is on the Reading Ladder. Every lesson tells you what to say and which page follows. You never sit there wondering what to do on Monday.

⏰

You'll set your own hours

A lesson is one hour at your table, after school or on a Saturday morning. Two a week fits around your own kids, your job or your retirement. You decide how many students you take.

📈

You'll keep about $24 of every $25 lesson

A lesson costs you a few sheets of printer paper, about $1. Tutors near you charge $20 to $40 an hour. The pricing sheet shows you what to charge, so you never work for free.

💵

You'll start with $27 and a printer

$27 for the Method and whatever paper and pencils you already own. A library printer works too. No classroom, no stock, no teaching license for private lessons in most places. After that, the first lesson pays for itself and more.

Year-round students

A Reason to Call You Every Season of the Year

There's no off-season for learning to read, and no off-season for a little extra income. There's always a report card, a teacher's note or a worried mom somewhere near you.

After you join

Your First 7 Days, Step by Step

Day 1–2

Read the Ladder, print your first lessons

One evening. Read how a lesson runs, print the 5-minute check and the first three lessons, and put them in a folder. No planning needed.

Day 3–4

Try one lesson with a child you know

A niece, a grandchild, a neighbor's kid, for free. Read the script, follow the page and see how easy the hour goes by. That's your practice.

Day 5–6

Set your price and tell people

The pricing sheet gives you the price. Post with the template, first to people who already know you: friends, church, the school pickup line and your local Facebook group.

Day 7

Book your first paid lesson

Run the 5-minute check, show the mom where her child is on the Ladder, and pick a day. Then print the next page.

That's it. One week. And just like that, you're teaching reading for a little extra income.

What you'll get

The Complete Method

From the first lesson you print to your first extra income from it.

Module 1

The Reading Ladder

Why loose worksheets don't work · and the fix

A folder of free worksheets has no order, so you never know if a child is ready for the next one. The Ladder puts reading in 8 steps, from first letter sounds to short stories. The 5-minute check shows you which step a child is on, and you start right there. No guessing, no planning on a Sunday night.

  • The 5-minute reading check, ready to print
  • How a one-hour lesson runs, minute by minute
Module 2

200 Ready-to-Print Reading Lessons

3 volumes · first letters to short stories

Letter sounds, blending, first words, sight words, tricky pairs and little stories. Start with Volume I, the lessons for children who are just beginning, and move up with each child. Every lesson is one page you can print and use the same day.

  • In the exact order to teach them
  • Ages 4 to 9, big print, clear pictures
Module 3

The Word-for-Word Scripts

What to say · what to correct · how to finish

You don't need to know phonics rules. The script tells you what to say first, how to correct a wrong sound kindly and how to end on a win, so you sound like you've done this for years from your very first lesson.

Module 4

The Stuck-Kid Guide

b and d · guessing · wiggling · tears

When a child guesses from the picture, flips b and d or puts their head on the table, it's almost always one of a few things. This guide shows you which one, and what to do in the next five minutes.

Module 5

Letter Cards & Reading Games

Cut out · play · learn

Printable letter cards, sound cards and table games for the part of the hour when attention runs out. A child who is building words with cards doesn't feel like they're working. It's the part they tell their mom about in the car.

Module 6

Parent Progress Sheets

One page · every week

What you worked on, what clicked and what to practice at home. Parents pay for what they can see. One simple page at pickup is what keeps a family coming back next month.

Questions Before You Start

Do I get anything in the mail?

No. This is a digital method: you get instant access to every lesson, script and printable the moment you pay. Nothing is shipped, so there's no waiting and no shipping cost.

I'm not a teacher. Can I really do this?

Yes. The Method was made for you. Every lesson tells you what to say, what to listen for and what comes next. If you're patient with kids and can read a page out loud, you can follow it. Your first lesson takes the longest to prepare.

Do I need a license?

In most places, private lessons at home don't need a teaching license. Some states have rules when a tutor counts as a child's homeschool teacher, and some towns ask for a home business registration. Check your state and town first. The Method is a teaching guide, not a credential, so never present it as one.

Aren't there free worksheets online?

There are, and that's the problem. They come in no order, and you spend the night before a lesson hunting for the next page. You don't need another free worksheet. You need 200 lessons in order, and a plan to turn them into extra income.

What if the child doesn't improve?

Children move at their own pace, and no one can promise a result. What you can do is start at the right step, use the Stuck-Kid Guide when a child stalls and show parents the small wins on the progress sheet. If you're worried about a child, tell the parents to talk to the school or a specialist.

Is this for dyslexia?

No. The Method doesn't diagnose or treat dyslexia or any learning difference, and you shouldn't offer that. If a parent suspects dyslexia, send them to the school or a qualified specialist. The Method is for everyday reading practice with children who need more time and attention.

What can I actually earn?

It depends on your hours. If you keep about $24 a lesson, 2 lessons a week works out to about $2,400 a year. Small groups and summer clubs can pay more. Results are not guaranteed and depend on your effort, prices and area.

$25 an hour for a neighbor? Who pays that?

Parents who are worried about a child. On Care.com the average reading tutor starts at about $23 an hour, and in some towns the listings run past $40. Specialized reading tutors can run well over $100. For many families, a patient person down the street at $25 is the easy yes.

What do I need to start?

A printer or a library printer, paper, pencils and a table. Scissors for the letter cards. If you own those, you can start with the $27 and nothing else.

What ages does it cover?

Children from about 4 to 9 who are learning to read or who need to catch up. The 5-minute check shows you where to start, whatever their age or grade.

What if nobody signs up?

You start with people who already know you: friends, church, the school pickup line and your local Facebook group. There's always a parent worried about a report card. The kit gives you the exact posts and messages, and the only thing you've spent is the $27.

Where do I find students?

Friends and word of mouth, local Facebook groups, church, libraries, homeschool groups and the moms at pickup. The Fill-Your-Schedule Kit shows you where to start in the first 30 days.

I can't compete with big tutoring centers.

You're not trying to. A center has a schedule, a contract and a different helper each week. You're the kind woman down the street who knows the child by name. That's what many parents are looking for.

I don't have time.

The lessons are already planned, so preparing takes as long as pressing print. Two hours a week is enough to start, and you pick the hours. You decide how many students you take.

I've tried side hustles before.

MLMs make you buy stock and recruit your friends. This is the opposite: no stock, no recruiting, and you help a child with something they'll use for the rest of their life.

Can I sell the lessons?

No. You can teach as many children as you like and print pages for your students, but the lessons, scripts and printables are for you. Sharing or reselling them isn't allowed.

Is it safe to buy online?

Yes. Checkout is secure, everything arrives in your email the moment you pay, and you're covered for 7 days.

And if it's not for me?

Your purchase is covered for 7 days. Open the Method, print a lesson, and if it isn't for you, send us one email and we'll refund you in full.
